TRANSPORT & INSTALLATION (T&I)

Transport & Installation is a complex process. The complexities of T&I vary significantly depending on whether the wind farm is bottom-fixed or floating, with each providing unique challenges. ER-Marine, as the expert on the issue in South Korea, is well-positioned to address these complexities

Safety, offshore expertise and a deep knowledge of the local Korean supply chain capabilities and limitations play significant roles; The risk picture between offshore oil & gas and offshore wind isn’t the same but there are the same operational aspects since the work is also pursued offshore. Technological progress is extremely rapid and expectations are high, 14,3 GW of offshore wind is the target for 2030 in South Korea.

ER-Marine has offshore expertise built up over a long period from worldwide operations, both in shipping activities, the offshore oil & gas industry, and the offshore wind industry in South Korea. We have learnt a great deal about offshore operations the past 20 years and we are used to working safely under demanding weather conditions in deep waters.

T & I activities are currently estimated to make up 30% of the capital expenditures (CAPEX) of offshore wind projects. Geographical and technical factors affect both CAPEX during construction and installation, such as the lack of supporting port infrastructure, the distance from the wind farm to shore, seabed conditions and water depths, availability of suitable, specialised vessels. Floating offshore wind farms are by default bigger wind turbines, further offshore to catch higher wind speeds, the distance to shore and the availability of suitable ports and specialised vessels is big challenge for the development of > GW floating wind farms.

ER-Marine has been actively involved in identifying T&I risks, barriers and opportunities in South Korea since 2020, helping clients to understand the specific Korean challenges relevant for T&I operations either bottom- fixed or floating wind farms.

ER-Marine was tasked to coordinate and supervise the deck- strengthening for two heavy lift vessels at a yard in Busan, South Korea. A condition survey of both heavy lift vessels was also performed by ER-Marine.

These vessels are currently chartered for an international project in the US..
